Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews grew up in the New Orleans neighborhood of Tremé and plays trumpet as well as the instrument which gave him his nickname (the "Shorty" part comes from the fact that he played trombone at a very early age).
He's the grandson of R&B legend Jessie Hill and brother to trumpter James Andrews.
He was Offbeat's 2007 Performer of the Year, and his 2010 album "Backatown" went to #1 on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz chart and remained there for 9 weeks.
