Roberto Mendes is very much a son of Santo Amaro, Bahia. This is akin to saying that Jelly Roll Morton was very much a son of New Orleans. Santo Amaro is a small town at the north end of Brazil's Baía de Todos os Santos (Bay of All Saints), ground zero in the creation of samba on Bahia's sugarcane plantations, and classically-trained Roberto is a master instrumentalist (guitar) and composer working in both the most rootsy end of this primordial samba and in highly wrought "translations" into more modern forms.
